The Aalto Centre 

The Aalto Centre, designed by renowned architect Alvar Aalto, is a must-visit, showcasing modern Finnish design. 

The Aalto centre is in the immediate vicinity of Seinäjoki’s railway centre.

Entrance fee: You can visit the sites free of charge within the opening hours in spaces open to the public. Please note that the buildings are in normal use as a town hall, library, church, parish centre, theatre and office building.

Lakeuden risti church 

Possibly the most iconic of the Aalto buildings is the Lakeuden risti church, as it can be seen from far distance and defines the view of Seinäjoki as a city. The roof of the cathedral falls and narrows towards the choir, and the floor slopes down towards the altar. The light fittings, chandeliers, communion silverware and altar textiles were all designed by Aalto, as were the stained-glass window of the chapel and the fountain at the foot of the church tower.

The Art and Culture Centre Kalevan Navetta 

The Art and Culture Centre Kalevan Navetta, located near the centre of Seinäjoki, is a diverse and stirring home for art, culture, and events. The 130-year-old red-brick cow barn building gathers under its high roof, e.g., contemporary art exhibitions, and food experiences.  The versatile premises of Kalevan Navetta invite you to enjoy yourself. 

At the street level, you will also find Taito Shop Seinäjoki, a specialty shop for handicrafts and gifts. The second and third floors of the building invite you to enjoy the changing contemporary art exhibitions of the Seinäjoki Taidehalli Arts Centre.

Museums: 

Museum of South Ostrobothnia provides a comprehensive look into the history of South Ostrobothnia and Seinäjoki. It is located on the verdant grounds of the Törnävä Manor. The manor house was built in the early 19th century and now hosts official functions. The picturesque and park-like Törnävä Museum Area, with its numerous buildings, invites everyone to explore the history of Seinäjoki.

Civil Guard and Lotta Svärd Museum in the centre of Seinäjoki showcases the work of the Civil Guard, the Lotta Svärd organisation and Jäger units. The museum is housed in buildings designed by architect Alvar Aalto in the 1920s to serve as the headquarters of the South Ostrobothnia Civil Guard and the home of Commander Matti Laurila. The buildings and grounds are recognised as a nationally significant cultural heritage site and protected under the Finnish Architectural Conservation Act.

Mallaskoski Brewery: Handcrafted beer for almost 100 years 

The terrace of Mallaskoski invites you to enjoy good company, local brewery products and delicious food. Guests can also take a tour of the brewery but his needs to be booked. You can learn about ingredients, brewing equipment, and their use and taste, if you wish. 

History: The founder of the brewery, Johan Wallenius, began the production of his beverages in 1921 in a corner of an old laundry. In 1928, Wallenius decided to purchase a plot of land near a roaring waterfall and build the Mallaskoski factory there. The factory started producing lemonades, soft drinks, and especially the “well-known” beer, which was exported even abroad. 

Duration approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes, depending on the size of the group.

Nature: 

Lake Kyrkösjärvi: Nature’s Serenity 

Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of South Ostrobothnia by visiting Lake Kyrkösjärvi. The clear waters and scenic surroundings provide a perfect backdrop for relaxation and outdoor activities. Kyrkösjärvi is located a bit further from the centre. 

There is a nature trail which starts at the end of Kyrkösvuorentien (p-area) on the shore of Lake Kyrkösjärvi. In the P-area there is an information board about the trails in the area and a signpost to this nature trail. The nature trail is 6 km long, but you can also follow a shorter route (3.8 km) if you wish. 

Kyrkösjärvi also has a beach located at Kyrkösjärventie 26 has changing rooms, showers and toilets. The facilities and the kiosk are open during the summer from 10 am to 8 pm daily. In addition, the area has two beach volleyball courts and a kiosk, a nature house, a hut and a 9-lane frisbee golf course. 

Swimming is allowed in the Kyrkösjärvi beach located at Kyrkösjärventie 26. It has changing rooms, showers, and toilets. The facilities and the kiosk are open during the summer from 10 am to 8 pm daily. In addition, the area has two beach volleyball courts and a kiosk, a nature house, a hut and a 9-lane frisbee golf course. 

Those circling the lake should definitely stop at the tower, which is the world’s largest wooden periscope. The 13-meter-high wooden observation tower functions as a periscope, thus serving as an unobstructed observation tower. The tower has received an award in the international architectural competition SD Rewiew 2015.
